Lang Switcher sound: clicks, a dull thud and how to turn it off

A double click means the word was replaced, a single click means there was nothing to replace, and a dull thud means the program deliberately refused. To turn the sound off, clear the “Sound feedback” box.

Three sounds

Every press of the hotkey gets a sound, and the sound tells you how it went:

  • A double click: the word was replaced.
  • A single click: the press did nothing. There was nothing to replace (the word had already been forgotten), the direction couldn’t be worked out, or the program hadn’t yet figured out what kind of field the cursor is in.
  • A dull thud: a single click with a low sound under it. The program deliberately refused: the cursor is in a password field, where keystrokes aren’t remembered, or, in the classic console, the word has a dead key or AltGr in it and can’t be retyped key by key.

All three use the same click. The sound is built into the program: there are no sound files on your disk.

Where else you’ll hear the thud

  • A ninth layout in the cycle. A cycle holds up to eight layouts. If you try to check a ninth box in the “Layouts” section, it stays empty, and you hear a thud.
  • A path without a file name in the exclusions field, such as C:\: “Add” won’t accept it, and the text stays in the field.

Where it’s quiet

  • In an excluded program. The hotkey goes to that program, and there’s no sound. The one exception is the first few dozen milliseconds after you switch to it: a press can still be caught then, with a thud.
  • When a word is forgotten on its own. After five minutes without typing, the program forgets the word silently.

How to turn it off

Tray menu → “Settings…” → “General”: clear “Sound feedback” and click “OK”. One switch covers all three sounds. In the settings file, it’s [feedback] sound = false.

Everyone nearby hears the refusal thud, and it tells them that your cursor is in a password field. If that bothers you, turn the sound off.
